If you’re searching this because your security guard card is about to expire—or worse, already did—breathe. This is a fixable situation, but only if you move with a clear compliance plan for your security guard license renewal.
Step 1: Identify your status (this determines your next move) - For NYS security guard license renewal
New York is very direct: once your ID card expires, you’re not eligible to keep working as a security guard. From there, the timeline matters:
Not expired yet: You can renew and stay smooth—build your “renewal runway” now.
Expired, but less than 6 months: You may still be eligible to renew (don’t procrastinate).
Expired for 6 months or more: NYS says you’ll be required to reapply for a new registration.
Reapplying means you’re back in “new application mode,” which includes items like proof of electronic fingerprinting and the required application fee.
Step 2: Nail the annual training rule (the #1 renewal deal-breaker) - For NYS security guard license renewal
NYS requires the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training each calendar year you hold a registration. Because your registration runs two years, you generally must complete two separate annual trainings within your registration’s effective and expiration dates to be eligible for renewal.
Also, if you’re newly employed, the 16-Hour OJT must be completed within 90 days of hire, and the annual is due within 12 calendar months of completing OJT, then annually after that.
Step 3: Don’t “DIY” your paperwork—training must be on file - For

NYS security guard license renewal
This is the silent killer: your training must be completed and on file for renewal. NYS says individuals can’t mail or fax certificates to the Department of State—an authorized school must submit completion (via DCJS, then it transfers electronically).
Translation: your training school is part of your compliance supply chain. Choose one that runs reporting like a business process, not a vibe.
Step 4: A “no drama” compliance checklist (save this)
Put your expiration date in your calendar with 90/60/30-day alerts.
Complete your annual training every calendar year.
Confirm your school submitted your roster—don’t assume.
If you didn’t receive a renewal form, request one through DOS.
If you’re past 6 months expired, switch mindset to reapply (fingerprinting + full application checklist).
Train with a school that’s actually authorized
Anpu Security Services is approved by NYS DCJS as a security guard training school under 9 NYCRR Part 6028 for training pursuant to GBL Article 7-A, §89-n.
